Postoperative Instructions: Dental Implants

Please read this important information regarding proper post-surgical care for dental implants.

Medications

Patients taking pain medications or other drugs that may slow reflexes should not operate machinery, cars, etc. while taking these drugs. Antibiotics should be taken as directed until the prescription runs out. Report any unusual reactions to medications.

Bone Grafting/Dental Implant 

  1. Bleeding—bleeding is normal. Apply pressure with the gauze for 30 minutes. 
  2. Pain—Take pain medication if you are experiencing pain.
  3. Swelling—If you have swelling, apply ice to the face for the first 72 hours. 
  4. Mouth Rinse—You may use any mouth rinse if you want to. 
  5. Diet—Regular diet is ok.
  6. Hygiene—Sutures will dissolve on its own after a week or two.
  7. FEVER—a low-grade fever for the first 3 days may occur following surgery and should not cause alarm.
  8. IN CASE OF AN UNUSUAL SYMPTOM—Call the office promptly. When calling after hours, please allow time for the answering service to pick up your call. Please keep your phone line free for a return call. 
  9. NO ELECTRIC TOOTHBRUSH for 6 weeks. ABSOLUTELY NO ELECTRIC TOOTHBRUSH ANYWHERE INSIDE THE MOUTH. WATER PIK or Airfloss is OK TO USE.
